PROJECT BACKGROUND :
The project was done as a part of my final dissertation in undergrad while pursuing my Bachelors in architecture, under the guidance of the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram to convert an abandoned space in the centre of the city into an inclusive, multi-functional public space close to transit nodes.

PROJECT TIMELINE :
6 Months - January to June 2021

TEAM :
Individual Project

ROLE :
Complete user and site research, surveys and analysis, concept development, design program creation, 2D drawings, 3D models, 3D renders, graphics and visuals.

LEARNINGS :
SPATIAL + USER-CENTRIC DESIGN - This attempt at understanding users and designing a space specifically for them was a new experience which involved a lot of new learnings. These include - methods and tactics of user research, lending a user experience lens to spatial design, creating functional yet user-centred spatial designs to fulfil commercial yet social needs, executing a project from end-to-end, designing spaces as well as systems to ensure optimum usage of the space’s potential.

HOW IT HELPED MY DESIGN PRACTICE :
This project not only helped me understand how to execute an architectural design project from start to finish, but also sensitised me towards how any kind of design, be it spatial or product, has to be rooted in the user's needs and system's requirements. As an architecture student, often time we are not taught the importance of doing deep into the intended user's needs and preferences, and how we're hardly taught about how might the design fit into a larger regional system. This project paved the way into bridging the gap between spatial and service design for me, and helped me realise my passion for designing for users first and aesthetics later.
